WE ARE FACING A DEFINING MOMENT FOR THE EBONY COMMUNITY, ITS FUTURE, ITS PEOPLE, FRIENDS OF EBONY, PROSPECT CHURCH/CEMETERY, AND BRUNSWICK COUNTY LEADERSHIP.
Ebony was established in 1882 and named after a champion race horse. While adapting to change over the years, the setting and atmosphere of the original community has remained almost the same as the original community. As a result, Ebony is on the map, so to speak, as a rare example of authentic rural, America with its 2 country stores -- that has survived. It engenders much community pride from locals as well as the extended Lake Gaston community, and visitors.
What's happening now? Efforts are underway to make way for a Dollar General in the heart of this historic community, on the east side of highway 903 across from Ebony General. The proposed location is on the land between a historic home place and farmland of one of the founding families of the community and the historic church, 400 ft south of the intersection. If this were approved it will open the door for easy business extension using the property adjacent to Dollar General on the land that would lie south of Dollar General to the Prospect Cemetery and Church.
More specifically, an application to bring Dollar General to Ebony that includes rezoning 8.36 acres from agriculture to business (or initially a portion thereof to accommodate Dollar General - 2+ acres) is being evaluated by Brunswick County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors.
Our Opposition Platform summarizes our position.

DownloadBrunswick County Zoning Ordinances protect the character and intent of A-1 Agricultural Districts by the use of constrained Conditional Use Permits for Business use requests - not spot re-zoning to B-1 Business that is being requested by this application!
Rezoning A-1 land to B-1 opens the door for inappropriate commercialization in the heart of this community - largely open-ended requiring no notice to the public and a rubber stamp approval because it complies with B-1 ordinances. Spot rezoning A-1 to B-1 undermines the County's rural heritage and Comprehensive Plan.
Any suggested benefits of a DG in this treasured, quaint setting do not offset the negative side effects and transformative impact to neighboring families and church. Two local stores will be put at risk. There are 3 Dollar Generals within 6 or10 miles of this location – and Family Dollar and Food Lion within 6.5 mi.
Ebony is in the Meherrin District.
This approval goes through 2 votes: Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors - and each includes a Public Hearing. The Board of Supervisors make the ultimate decision and their vote may or may not agree with the Planning Commission vote.
